John 13:35

"Most men know a lost of people by name or acquaintance. Conversations with these individuals are light, brief and nonthreatening. Even in the church, very few men have close friends. For the most part, men are spiritually fed but relationally bankrupt....Men are looking for spiritual brothers who will become genuine friends. In spite of many stereotypes, most men desire to draw near to people who will encourage, exhort and love them. Out of brotherly love grows hope. That is what Jesus means when he says, 'By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.' John 13:35"

There have been a couple of conversations going about getting a group of guys together on weekday mornings to meet over coffee or breakfast. Let me know if that's of interest and I'll see if we can work out the logistics of time and place.

I am not really interested in getting together in the mornings, I have kids to take to school then. Also, I don't need another spiritual feeding. As the blog said, "... men are spiritually fed but relationally bankrupt". I would appreciate get togethers with guys in informal settings from time to time. In that spirit, this is the time of year for football bowl games. Specifically, Purdue is playing in the Champs Bowl game on Friday, Dec. 29th. I am willing to host any of the guys in the men's class and others who may not attend the class who would like to come to our house(Buck Creek area) and watch the game on TV together. In fact, it would be nice to have some event outside of the formal church setting quarterly that guys could get together and have some "bonding time." Men who want to bring their sons are also welcome. Just an offer. Anyone interested?

Great idea, Doc. We need spiritual infilling and instruction, but sometimes it's good to just get together with men of like mind and spirit to talk, laugh, eat, and generally just hang out. I personally also need a time when I can get together for spiritual food, but yours is a great idea. Unfortunately, I'll be in Florida with the Indiana Wesleyan basketball team on the day Purdue plays. (may even take in the game) I won't be available for your party, though. By the way, can I borrow your golf travel bag? David

Eric, I would be interested in getting together a morning a week, especially in the winter months. I put in too many hours the rest of the year to probably make it work. David

David, I mentioned this to Kevin today. He's taking the lead in organizing an early morning conversation this Wednesday. Hopefully he contacted you today..or will soon. I'll check in shortly with details. ~ Eric

Dr. Ken, Thanks for the football invite. (You're speaking my language!) Unfortunately it looks like we're going to have other commitments on the 29th. I'm game to look for another time to pull guys together very, very soon. (Do you think the Nagel's would allow us to organize an official small group to "study" the Indy Colts?) ~ Eric

David,
Sorry you won't be able to watch the Purdue bowl game in Indiana but Florida sounds like a nicer place to be. You can use my golf bag if you like; the hard shell, right? Let me know and I will bring it by on one of the next two Sunday mornings.

Kevin B contacted me at church tonight and I'll be heading up a group once a week to meet at 5am. Haven't decided on a specific day yet. If you are interested in this time frame call me at home or click on my e-mail link in my personal profile in this Blog. You can do that by viewing the Bethel Men's Ministry Blog homepage. To the right you will see my name along with a few others. Click on my name. You will then see my personal profile. The upper left corner contains a link to my e-mail address. The rest is up to you.
Hope to hook up with a few early birds!

Brothers, 8 of us met this morning at 6:00 at McD's on the east side and talked about breaking up into several groups depending on time, location, day of week, etc. This can be a great thing for our church if we're diligent to carry through as God directs. The enemy hates this..... David

Doctor Ken, I would appreciate using your hard case travel bag. Sunday after next would be plenty soon enough; you may want to take a trip before then...... David

This one is for our golfing brothers...

*As It Lies*

Bill and Bob, longtime golfing buddies, were involved in a match-play contest with the score "all-square" at the 18th tee.

Bill slices his tee shot way left, and the ball finally stops on the cart path. Meanwhile, Bob smashes his first shot straight down the middle.

"Oh well," says Bill, "I should get a free drop from there."

"No way!" says Bob, "We play the ball as it lies."

And so Bill did.

After dropping his opponent on the middle of the fairway, Bill took the golf cart to his lie on the concrete path. Sparks fly from the cart path, as Bill makes a few aggressive practice swings.

Finally, Bill hits the ball off the cart path, leaving a miraculous shot only 3 feet from the pin.

As the two meet in the fairway, Bob comments, "That was a great shot...what club did you use?"

"Your 6 iron," says Bill.
